Sunday, raging wind and the first day of winter. Saturday was OK
Sunday, raging wind, maybe a storm front. Saturday was just OK
There was a full moon yesterday. I wonder whether that had anything to do with the weather??
Lots of kiters said today would be fantastic wind. They were right.
Klaus came by the house at 11 and rigged, but I didn't get to the beach until 1:30. I don't think I missed anything.
I think today marks a change in the weather because Mr. Winter is showing his ugly, cold head. It's time for long wet suits. I even saw some guys wearing gloves and booties.
"Big Mike" on the left is showing Klaus his new kite. It's a Slingshot Octane 13 sq.m. He is really excited about the purchase. I could hear Mike singing Madonna's song "It's a virgin, used for the very first time. It's a virgin and I'm not going to wreck it today."
Hmmm. As you can see from the sand blowing in the background the wind is up. I'm guessing it's blowing over 18mph and going up. A really good time for a lesson. Hold on tight!!!!
Bobby is helping Roberto check out his kite. I think they were pondering pulling the front lines a knot or two.
Rosemary was at Belmont with Aaron and her mom. Here she's helping Klaus launch. In this shot I can count thirteen kites out.
I first went out on my twin tip but came back for my directional. As you can see from the wind graph the wind direction around 3 was side shore and the combination of the gusty conditions and the rough water convinced me to ride my "Caddy."
Klaus and Juliano were preparing for a passing hand slap. Klaus usually puts some power in them.
Pilar caught me "surfing" the waves at Belmont. It was really a lot of fun kind of dreaming about riding them. For some reason that last two days we have had bigger waves here.
Ruth came down to the beach after her usual afternoon swim. She has seen the air and water temps dropping, that's why she's wearing her spring suit.
Ruth is my Sherpa today.
Got to have a group shot. L-R, Rijk, me, Juliano, Klaus and Ruth. Time for something warm.
As a little joke I poured beer down Ruth's wet suit. To wake her up. Then I washed it off with warm water. I don't think she thought it was that warm....hmm
Jorge was coming in for a little rest as Bobby was going out. The wind lasted a long time today.
At about 4 o'clock the wind changed direction and allowed us to get up-wind much better. Pilar pushed the zoom-in button and caught me up near the pier. I would then ride down-wind cutting back and forth on "Big Red." I am happy to report that I pulled off three starboard to port jibs, but only got my back foot in on two of them.
In the mean time Henry was getting some massive air. We didn't get in on film but Rijk said he had never jumped higher.
At 5:30 it was pretty much over. A lot of us were getting cold and wanted our "Binky's."
Last shot of the day. Some kiters never quit (or they get here late). We went home and had some tomato soup to warm up. Mr. Winter is here but I heard it may be warm next week. Let's hope.
Saturday was just OK
Wind came up around 4 o'clock....
so we waited. Rijk and Klaus worked this morning. Up at 5, at work at 6. No wonder the boy is tired,
Naji and his cousins were enjoying the wonderful day too.
Radko, on the left, just took delivery of his new rrd windsurfing board. Christopher guided him through the sale is his old and purchase of the new. You should see the bottom.
Juliano joined Radko, Klaus and me trying to finish off the "Kegger" that Klaus brought. That was not a problem.
Here Klaus, the host of the party, is serving one up for Bobby and his friend.
Todd, in the center, has been up North for a while. Welcome back Todd.
Bobby is heading out.
Here Radko and Christopher are out there doing windsurfing type things.
Klaus came back to the beach making the announcement, "It's cold MAN!!!!"
We actually had waves. I heard they were head high at Huntington Beach. Anyone know???
